Plaid & Grandpa Sweaters
Oh yeah. My style in a nutshell.
PLAID
There really is nothing better; cozy, casual, freaking awesome. Definitely my wardrobe go to.
Other than the fact I thought that was an awesome title for this post, I actually can’t get enough of plaid and grandpa sweaters. I need one in every color. The weather in Cape Town (at least winter weather) is perfect for these, until it starts raining and I pull out my North Face.
When the Greenpop office is FREEZING cold, which is pretty much everyday, unless outside is really nice, and the heat creeps inside, but other than that, it’s layers. And more layers. Layers of tops, layers of socks, oh and then a blanket. (Which thankfully Greenpop has a good stash at the office, since everyone feels the same about the temperature.) So grandpa sweaters and plaid are good for that.
Anyways.. this past week has been major preparation for Zambia, and a lot of print has to go out ASAP to advertise for the big event, and also all the smaller events occurring throughout the three weeks. Since I am currently the only graphic designer in the office, they decided to bring in another person for the time being. Her name is Sheryl, she’s super cool and it’s definitely nice to have someone in the office again who I can jumble ideas off of, get criticism, and just have someone understand the weirdo designer crises we get. She gave us all two documentaries to check out. (YAY I love documentaries!)
Castles in the Sky by Taylor Steele
One is called Castles in the Sky, which is a cool, interesting documentary about travel and surfing, which follows surfers throughout five locations (India, Iceland, Vietnam, Peru and Africa) in a span of 3 years. There isn’t a lot of dialogue, but the imagery is amazing, and the soundtrack is even better. So check that one out! Here are a few songs from the playlist:
Glass by Bat for Lashes
The Rabbit, the Bat & the Reindeer by Dr. Dog
Living Darfur by Mattafix
Miles Away by Years Around the Sun
Mykonos by Fleet Foxes
“There was once a man who became unstuck in the world.
What did he do?”
I really liked this quote from the movie, and want to apply it to my life.
There was once a girl who became unstuck in the world.
What did she do?
Stay tuned to find out..!
The other documentary was about water and how it is affected by human emotion, and some really weird crazy spiel about the chemical compound of waters and human interactions. Slightly interesting, but it didn’t necessarily live up to my expectations. I don’t know if it has a title.
Friday was a gloomy day in Cape Town, and the rain was pouring after work. I was really craving some beer, so I manned up (not really, the rain had slowed by the point we actually left) and we went to the liquor store just down the next street over (so yes, not really that far, and yes, you have to buy beer in a liquor store, and before 6 pm... a few flaws of South Africa). I walk in and immediately run to the beer fridge, where I am surrounded by label after label of craft beer. I am so happy. I immediately grab three that 1) have good label design and 2) look like good quality ales, and head to the counter. The first thing the cashier says,
“Is this all for you?”
“Yes.” (I would’ve grabbed more but didn’t want to be completely judged).
“This isn’t sissy beer, we have some ginger beer if you’d like that..”
“I don’t like sissy beer!”
He rung up my order. Apparently not a lot of girls strut their craft beer stuff in Cape Town. But anyways, for three bottles (each 500 ml or a 16 oz size) the total was R70, or SEVEN BUCKS. Gotta love how cheap Cape Town can be :)
Beers on beers on beers
Saturday a group of interns were planning to go skydiving, but plans fell through. Next weekend is my last, so I am hoping to be able to jump out of a plane before I have to board one home! At night, I went to the Labia (the independent movie theatre where Forest in Focus was held) and saw To the Wonder. I don’t really know what to say about it, because I don’t really know what it was about to be honest. Maybe love, maybe God? Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko were the main characters. There were some beautiful shots, but very little dialogue with so much human interaction. It was an interesting way to present the film, but the story line wasn’t as strong as it could’ve been. But other than the confusing storyline, the overall experience was good!
This is because... to see a movie at the Labia only costs R35! Basically $3.50, which is UNHEARD OF in the US. This is why I don’t bother going to movie theaters anymore, because the admission and cost of snacks is ridiculous. Since the Labia is an independent movie theatre, they also serve alcohol and a wide variety of treats besides typical candy bars and popcorn. They do offer ‘sloppy slurpies’ as we Redlands kids call them, where they add some tasty vodka to the beverage, and all relatively cheap. But I went for an Irish Coffee, my new favorite. I had one a few weeks ago at an asian restaurant with Chris, and my oh my they are GOOOOD. Coffee plus a little bit of booze? What’s not to love? It was absolutely delicious.
Not the Irish Coffee from the movie theatre, but both were deeeelish.
I also saw a preview for the movie The Place Beyond the Pines, starring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper (oh yeahhhh). Says it’s a crime drama, but with those actors as headliners I will definitely be seeing it regardless of reviews, criticism, etc.
So good, relaxing weekend, I have a feeling my last weekend coming up will be FULL of adventure! Aka skydiving and Cape Point! Woohoo! Now I must get back to my soccer game and First Light Golden Ale.
Savour the World: A Taste for Travel (My next series as I travel as far and wide as I possibly can).
“There is no better way to discover the true culture of a place than to unearth those spots where locals congregate to eat and drink. Places where great food is served often yield the best travel experiences of all.

A little Greenpop motto
Hahahah story of my life.
