Life is short

Yesterday was a good day.

In the morning Chris and I woke up at 6 AM and hiked up to Signal Hill to watch the sunrise. At first I thought, getting up early? I’ll take my sleep.. then I realized, I am in Cape Town.. when am I ever going to get this chance again? (especially when the winter weather has approached us now, and today was actual clear blue skies). Definitely was worth getting out of bed two hours early, we made it just before the sun was rising, the colors in the sky were unbelievable. We even saw the moon as we were heading up, and it truly was a magical experience. One major benefit to Signal Hill, is that you have not only an amazing view of the waterfront, but Table Mountain and Lion’s Head are in clear sight behind you. One of the endless excitements of Cape Town is the natural beauty this city has, and you don’t have to travel far (or at all) to notice it. Not only will I remember this morning through the awesome photographs that were taken, but it definitely marks another amazing memory of Cape Town, and probably in my lifetime.

As cliche as it is, life is short, and it’s the little things that are going to add up to the big things. Some people take watching the sunrise as just another experience in watching nature, but in reality it can mean so much more. These little experiences happening throughout the last four weeks of my life have been unexpected, challenging, frustrating (at times), amazing; truly an abundance of different emotions. My goal is to make the best of every situation, and not to live life in fear but in a positive and active way (which may or may not be outside my comfort zone, but isn’t that the point?)

After the amazing start to the day, we headed back and off to the office. We may have been 45 minutes late, but I think the excuse was a pretty damn good one. Lunch was a delicious (per usual) curry, full of flavor and warmth (which one particularly needs at the ever freezing Greenpop office). I feel like I am finally getting into the groove of things, and gaining a better grip of life at the office, and how I can use and also improve my skills as a designer. So ya, another fun, typical day at the office (apart from me wearing a sign as fellow Greenpop-ers Will and Meghan were handing out popcorn to promote the evening’s event: Forest in Focus).

Forest in Focus, the first night of three which showed five award-winning documentary shorts, as well as live music and a speaker. The venue for the event was at the Labia, not far from the Hope Street Market, which is also the oldest independently owned cinema in Cape Town. It is an awesome, yet cute movie theatre, and the perfect spot for this event. My role in the evening, one of the beloved bartenders! (yet again) My duties mainly consisted of opening bottles and bottles of red wine, which can actually be quite fun. Overall the night was a real success, all Greenpop-ers, movie go-ers, and environmental peeps gathered for a night of cinema, music and discussion. One of the fun aspects of the evening, like I’ve said before, is having people bring their USB, and while they are watching the films, we load up all of the information onto their flash drive. This not only allows them to have the information for their personal use, but creates a chain of awareness and a new way of ‘sharing’ social media in a positive and active way. Cool right?! People are now empowered by the films, and when they are able to actually share this information firsthand with others, the message spreads.

So a very successful Thursday indeed. We shall see what this weekend has in store for me! Hopefully the good weather continues, which usually brings along good and epic adventures.
